Eidur Smári Gudjohnsen · Iceland

UEFA Champions League 2005-06 player's profile

Surprisingly agile considering his height, Eidur Gudjohnsen brings speed and technical excellence to any attack and, after six seasons with Chelsea FC, will be keen to impress having accepted a new challenge at FC Barcelona.

Club
By the age of 15 Gudjohnsen was playing Icelandic league football for Valur Reykjavík. A year later and he had signed for Dutch side PSV Eindhoven, and at 17, a broken ankle almost ended his career. It fell to England's Bolton Wanderers FC to snap him up in 1998 and he repaid them with 20 goals in his first season. Gudjohnsen's €7.5m move to Chelsea FC in 2000 led to a fearsome partnership with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink which brought the Icelander 40 Premiership goals in his first four seasons in London. He played a large part in Chelsea's charge to the Premiership title in 2004/05, featuring in all but one of their 38 league games but his chances were more limited in another title-winning season the following year so Gudjohnsen opted to accept a four-year deal at Camp Nou with Chelsea receiving a reported €11.7m in return.

National team
Gudjohnsen represented Iceland at all levels before breaking through during qualifying for UEFA EURO 2000™. Was the country's spearhead in qualifying for the same competition four years later, although Iceland failed to progress to Portugal, and remained a first choice in the ultimately unsucessful attempt to reach the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Did you know?
Gudjohnsen has lived and breathed football all his life. His father, Arnor, was just 17 and playing professional football in Belgium when he was born in September 1978.
