UEFA Champions League 2004-05 player's profile

Once hailed as the saviour of German football, Sebastian Deisler is an excellent passer, crosses the ball well and is also dangerous from free-kicks.

Club
Deisler was 19 when he moved from VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach to top-flight side Hertha BSC Berlin in 1999 and subsequently excelled for his new club in the UEFA Champions League. His first professional coach Friedel Rausch predicted he would be "mentioned in the same breath as [Fritz] Walter, [Uwe] Seeler and [Franz] Beckenbauer". Deisler agreed to join FC Bayern München midway through 2001/02 but a knee injury delayed his debut until February 2003, playing the last 14 minutes of an 8-0 German Cup quarter-final win against 1. FC Köln. Injury and depression ruled him out of much of 2003/04 before he became a father and regained his fitness. He was back in action in 2004/05 albeit primarily as a substitute, playing his part in the first of two domestic doubles under coach Felix Magath, although another knee injury ruled him out of contention for the latter part of 2005/06.

National team
Deisler went from helping Germany to the final of the 1998 UEFA European Under-18 Championship to winning his first senior cap in just 19 months. A recurring knee injury cost him a place at the 2002 FIFA World Cup finals, and he was also forced to miss UEFA EURO 2004™ and the 2006 World Cup through injury.

Did you know?
Deisler was denied the chance to wear the prized No10 shirt at Bayern because the club had sold too many shirts with his original No26.
