August 31: Christoph Metzelder has undergone surgery for cartilage damage in his right knee which will keep him out of action for eight weeks.
2007
May 28: Borussia Dortmund coach Thomas Doll confirmed that Metzelder will join on a free transfer Real Madrid at the end of the season.

June 29: Played for Germany on their EURO 2008 final 0-1 defeat against Spain. As all the German defence did, he struggled to keep an eye (and at bay) the Spanish attackers.

FIFA World Cup™ Germany 2006 player's profile

After spells in the Schalke 04 and Preussen Munster youth teams, Metzelder arrived at Borussia Dortmund in the 2000/01 season.
The 1.93m defender was an instant hit in the black and yellow shirt and was called up to the German squad in only his second professional season with the club.

After winning the German championship with Dortmund in 2002, the 21-year-old travelled to the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan™, where Germany finished runners-up.

A persistent achilles tendon injury set the prodigious talent back in 2003, but Metzelder has once again been a mainstay of his club side since the second half of the 2004/05 season and should give his national team the necessary steel in defence.
