Damien Duff · Republic of Ireland

UEFA Champions League 2005-06 player's profile

A winger who can also be used up front, Damien Duff's pace has proved a potent weapon against the very best defences.

Club
He moved to England to join Blackburn Rovers FC as a schoolboy, and first turned out for the Ewood Park first team in May 1997. The following season he was a regular for the Lancashire club and was at his scintillating best as Rovers won the English League Cup in 2002. In July that year he joined Chelsea in a €24m deal and while injury restricted Duff in 2003/04, he formed a fearsome wing partnership with Arjen Robben the following season before a shoulder injury curtailed his campaign for the Premiership champions. However, first-team starts were harder to come by as Joe Cole's improved form brought increasing pressure for places in the Chelsea midfield, although Duff had some consolation with another title winners' medal.

National team
A member of the Republic of Ireland team that took third place at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 1997, Duff's first senior cap followed in 1998. He missed out on much of the 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign through injury but played four times in Korea/Japan, scoring once. Ireland's failure to qualify for UEFA EURO 2004™ or the 2006 World Cup denied him further chances to impress at the highest levels.

Did you know?
Asked about how he spends his free time, Duff told one newspaper: "Mostly I just sleep."
