Dennis Bergkamp joined Ajax at the age of 14. Few of the Ajax coaches expected him to reach the levels of success that he did. After 6 prolific seasons at Ajax where he scored a hundred goals in just 185 games. He was now a regular in the Dutch squad, and was similarly prolific at international level. He had outstanding games in 1993 against England. He scored two goals at Wembley, as Holland qualified for World Cup 94.
Dutch international Bergkamp has written his own chapter in Highbury history since his move from Inter in 1995. Recognised by his peers in the PFA and the Football Writers in 1998 when he landed a personal double Player of the Year. Another twice-Double winner who can still score vital goals but is just at home setting up colleagues with defence splitting passes. Along with youngster Jose Reyes, Bergkamp ably assisted Thierry Henry during the club`s successful 2003/2004 Premiership campaign. [July 2004] |
