Edgard Davids · Netherlands
UEFA EURO
2004 player's profile
At his best, the Surinam-born Dutch international Edgar Davids
is almost the complete midfield player, combining technique and
tenacity with a surprisingly subtle touch.
National team
Davids first appeared for the Netherlands in a 1-0 defeat against
the Republic of Ireland in April 1994. He was sent home from
EURO '96 for publicly criticising coach Guus Hiddink, but
was back to his best at the 1998 FIFA World Cup - where he made
the team of the tournament - and at UEFA EURO 2000.
UEFA EURO 2004 qualifying
Davids scored the Netherlands' first qualifying goal in their
opening 3-0 victory against Belarus and subsequently bossed the
midfield in five of the remaining seven Group 3 fixtures and
both legs of the play-off defeat of Scotland.
Club
His first season as a professional with AFC Ajax ended with the
Dutch maestros winning the 1991/92 UEFA Cup. Ajax claimed the
Dutch Cup the following term, a success preceding three successive
championships and a UEFA Champions League victory in 1994/95,
beating AC Milan 1-0 - the club he was to join on a free transfer
in 1996.
1996: Davids initially failed to settle in Italy after
joining Milan, breaking his leg almost immediately, and managing
just 19 Serie A showings before a 5.3m transfer to Juventus
in December 1997 revived him.
1997: Davids was comfortable in Turin and he ended the
1997/98 season an Italian champion. He continued to be a mainstay
of the team until he was banned at the end of the 2000/01 season
after testing positive for the steroid nandrolone. Nicknamed
the 'Pitbull', Juventus coach Marcello Lippi once described him
as "my one-man engine room". Davids won a third Scudetto
as Juve defended their Italian crown in 2002/03. He was often
inspirational in Europe, too, playing 15 times as the club made
it all the way to the Champions League final before losing to
AC Milan on penalties.
2003/04: Enjoyed a terrific campaign after joining FC
Barcelona on loan in January. He went on to play 18 times for
Barça as they surged up the Primera División table
to finish second.
Did you know?
Davids wears protective glasses during matches after having operations
on both eyes due to acute glaucoma.
