FIFA World Cup™ Germany 2006 player's profile

After joining Barcelona as a 12-year-old prodigy in 1996, Iniesta rapidly progressed through the various youth levels and made his senior debut in 2002. During the 2004/05 season, he featured in every league match but one, as Barcelona won the Spanish title. The midfield playmaker represented Spain at the 2001 FIFA U-17 World Championship before starring at the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship, where he scored three times to help his country reach the final.

UEFA Champions League 2005-06 player's profile

Immensely skilful, a master at conducting the game from midfield and fearless during big occasions, Andrés Iniesta is one of the most intelligent and prodigious talents to have emerged from Spain in recent times.

National team
Iniesta burst on to the international scene in 2001, helping Spain win the UEFA European Under-16 Championship, and was in the squad that claimed the UEFA European Under-19 Championship the following year. In 2003 he formed part of the Spanish side that reached the FIFA World Youth Championship final in the United Arab Emirates, and was named in the FIFA All-Star Team. Went on to captain the U21 side.

Club
Barça scouts spotted Iniesta playing at his local club Albacete Balompié aged 12, and he was swiftly signed and worked his way up the ranks. Louis van Gaal handed him his debut on 29 October 2002, a UEFA Champions League game against Club Brugge KV. Appeared eleven times in the league in 2003/04, mostly as a deputy for Camp Nou favourite Ronaldinho, as Barça sealed second place, scoring once.

2004/05: Iniesta successfully nailed down a permanent slot in the first team and was the only squad member to play in every league match over the title-winning season. Displayed an unselfish attitude by regularly aiding strikers Samuel Eto'o and Ronaldinho but was unfortunate in front of goal - denied by the woodwork on several occasions, he found the net just twice.

Did you know?
Iniesta's parents followed their son's performances in the UAE at a local restaurant as the tournament was only broadcast on satellite television.

IFA World Youth Championship Emirates 2003 player's profile

Most observers agree that Spanish fortunes at this FIFA World Youth Championship will largely depend on the performances of midfield maestro Andrés Iniesta. The pride of the FC Barcelona youth system pulls all the strings in the Spanish attack with his inch-perfect passing and astonishing raw talent. As well as having turned out for the Catalan giant's first team, Iniesta captained Spain at the U-17 World Championship Trinidad and Tobago 2001. Senior national coach Iñaki Sáez is effusive when he speaks about the youngster: "You don't teach Iniesta about football, he teaches you".
