April: Member of the Villarreal team that reached the UEFA Champions League semifinals, losing against Arsenal on dramatic style.

June 30: Agreed to move to Club Atletico de Madrid on a four-year deal reported to be in the region of €21m.

April 6: Scored once in Atletico de Madrid's 6-3 defeat of Almeria, to take his personal tally in La Liga to 68 and become the highest-ever Uruguayan goalscorer in the history of the Spanish league.
June 17: Scored a hat-trick to help Uruguay rout a shambolic Peru 6-0 in their World Cup qualifier.
2009
May 23: Scored a 14-minute hat-trick for Atletico Madrid on their La Liga 4-1 defeat of Athletic Bilbao.
May 30: Scored his 32nd Liga goal of the season during Club Atletico de Madrid's 3-0 win over UD Almeria to claim the ESM Golden Shoe as Europe's top goalscorer as well as Spain's Pichichi award for the second time. He equalled Prudencio Sanchez's 1940/41 club record of scoring in eight successive league games and became the first player to score 30 goals or more in a Liga season since former FC Barcelona striker Ronaldo hit 34 in 1997.
