Angelo Peruzzi · Italy
UEFA EURO
2004 player's profile
A goalkeeper of huge promise as a youth, Angelo Peruzzi went
on to fulfil his immense potential with Juventus FC, winning
every conceivable honour as his excellent positional sense played
a significant role in the club's success.
National team
Peruzzi played in the finals of EURO 96 as Italy's first
choice, and was a reserve at the FIFA World Cup in France two
years later. However, after 26 caps his international career
came to a premature halt after a 0-0 draw against Norway in February
1999 and he had to wait until 28 April this year for his next
Azzurri appearance when he played in the drawn friendly against
Spain.
Club
Born in 1970, Peruzzi was thought of as one of Italy's brightest
goalkeeping prospects following an impressive loan spell at Hellas-Verona
FC in 1989/1990. However, in October 1990 he was banned for a
year after traces of the amphetamine Fentermine were discovered
in a routine dope test.
1991: Peruzzi signed for Juventus in summer 1991 and rewarded
the club's faith as he went on to establish himself as the first-choice
goalkeeper. His career in Turin culminated in the 1996 UEFA Champions
League final win against holders AFC Ajax, starring in the penalty
shoot-out success in Rome's Stadio Olimpico.
2000: Having spent the 1999/00 season with FC Internazionale,
Peruzzi joined S.S. Lazio the following season for a then world-record
fee for a goalkeeper of 17.9m. Peruzzi played 30 times
as Lazio claimed fourth position in Serie A and a place in the
qualifying round of the Champions League.
2003/04: Enjoyed another fine term, playing 29 games in
Serie A as Lazio finished sixth and five in the Champions League.
The Biancoazzurri enjoyed more success in the Coppa Italia, beating
Juventus FC 4-2 in the two-legged final to qualify for the UEFA
Cup.
Did you know?
As a 14-year-old, Peruzzi was a ballboy at the 1984 European
Champion Clubs' Cup final between Liverpool FC and AS Roma, which
also went to penalties.
