Martin Laursen · Denmark
UEFA EURO
2004 player's profile
A strong and powerful centre-back, Martin Laursen has developed
into a top-class defender for club and country.
National team
A former Danish Under-21 international, Laursen made his senior
debut against Portugal in March 2000. Twice on the bench at UEFA
EURO 2000, he played all four games at the 2002 FIFA World
Cup prior to elimination by England. Having scored a vital last-gasp
equaliser against Romania to help Denmark to UEFA EURO 2004,
he was again ever-present as they reached the last eight.
Club
Silkeborg IF gave Laursen his break in the 1995/96 season, and
after helping them finish second in the Danish top flight in
1997/98, he moved to Italian side Hellas-Verona FC, then in Serie
B.
1998: Laursen's first term in Verona was wrecked by a
knee injury, but he returned to star in the next two campaigns,
playing 52 games in Serie A. After a 10m transfer to Parma
AC fell through he joined AC Milan in the summer of 2001. Laursen
took time to establish himself at the San Siro, but was a member
of the Milan side that reached the 2001/02 UEFA Cup semi-finals.
The following season, Laursen played nine matches in Milan's
victorious UEFA Champions League campaign - but not the final
victory against Juventus FC - and another ten in the league.
2003/04: After appearing just ten times as Milan won Serie
A, Laursen was sold to Aston Villa FC for 4.5m in May 2004,
signing a four-year deal.
Did you know?
Laursen was given the job of marking Zinedine Zidane against
France in Korea/Japan - as Denmark beat the holders 2-0.

BBC's UEFA EURO 2004 player's profile
Powerful defender Martin Laursen tasted glory with AC Milan
in the 2003 Champions League final.
Laursen arrived at the San Siro in 2001 after successful spells
at Verona and Danish club Silkeborg.
But he found first team opportunities limited and opted for a
£3m move to Premiership side Aston Villa in May 2004.
The big Dane remains coach Morten Olsen's first choice at centre-back
in a resolute Denmark back four.
Laursen normally plays alongside former Milan defender Thomas
Helveg in the centre of defence with Niclas Jensen and Rene Henrikson
as full-backs.
He is renowned for his strong presence at set-pieces and is a
danger going forward.
