Francesco Toldo · Italy

UEFA Champions League
2005-06 player's profile
Francesco Toldo came into his own at UEFA EURO 2000 with
a string of outstanding displays in the Italy goal, and has continued
to be highly influential ever since.
National team
Although he had made his debut for the Azzurri against Croatia
five years earlier, it was in the Low Countries that Toldo's
defiance was seen at his best, saving two penalties in normal
time against the Netherlands and then three in the ensuing semi-final
shoot-out. Despite those exploits, it was Gianluigi Buffon who
was first choice for Italy at the 2002 FIFA World Cup and UEFA
EURO 2004 and Toldo retired from international football
after the latter finals.
Club
Toldo spent his formative years in the AC Milan youth ranks,
though he never appeared for the first team. It was a similar
story at Hellas-Verona FC before the giant custodian found his
feet at Trento Calcio, playing 38 games. He stepped up in class
the following term, impressing for US Ravenna in the third division
to prompt a move to ACF Fiorentina.
1993: His first season in Florence
saw Toldo star in the Viola's promotion-winning campaign, and
during his eight years at the club he never failed to play less
than 30 league matches in a season - his consistency, presence
and brilliant shot-stopping marking him out as a club goalkeeping
legend.
2001: After helping Fiorentina
lift the Italian Cup in his final year, Toldo moved to FC Internazionale
Milano, disappointing both FC Barcelona and Parma FC who also
coveted his services. Inter finished runners-up in his first
two seasons and in the second, a string of solid displays helped
them reach the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. He was again
a regular as they clinched another Champions League campaign
in 2003/04.
2004/05: After a poor start
to the season Toldo lost his place to Alberto Fontana before
returning a month later both to the team and to form as Inter
finished third, reached the Champions League quarter-finals and
won the Coppa Italia.
Did you know?
Toldo originally played as a defender but never looked back after
stepping in for an absent goalkeeper aged 13.

UEFA EURO 2004 qualifying
Buffon's form meant Toldo did not appear in any of Italy's eight
qualifiers. He was an unused substitute on five occasions, the
first fixture in Azerbaijan and the final four matches.
