UEFA Champions League 2004-05 player's profile

A quick and opportunistic striker, Vincenzo Montella is effective both as a starter and as a substitute.

National team
Following his Italy debut on 5 June 1999 against Wales, Montella was part of the squad that reached the UEFA EURO 2000™ final, appearing as a substitute in the decider against France. He continued in the team for the 2002 FIFA World Cup campaign, scoring his first international goals in a 2-1 win in England and subsequently playing in Korea/Japan against Mexico. Montella was dropped after winning his 18th cap in October 2002 - a defeat by the Welsh.

Club
Originally with Empoli FC in Serie C1, Montella broke into the side as a 16-year-old in 1990/91. Four seasons later he caught the eye by scoring 17 league goals and earning a move to Genoa 1893. One Serie B campaign and 21 league goals later, UC Sampdoria took him across the city and into the top flight.

1996: In three years in Serie A with Sampdoria, Montella registered more than 50 goals, and after his team were relegated in 1999 he stayed in the top tier with AS Roma, who paid a fee not far below €25m. He scored twice on his derby debut against S.S. Lazio. He then claimed 14 goals in the Scudetto-winning 2000/01 campaign - despite making 16 of his 28 appearances from the bench - before hitting 13 in 16 games the next term. However, in 2002/03, he failed to reach double figures for the first time since 1994.

2003/04: Montella's season was disrupted by injury and he underwent surgery twice, the second time on his right knee. He still managed to score five times in eleven Serie A matches, thus continuing to average a goal every two league games for Roma.

Did you know?
Montella notched four goals in a 5-1 home win against Lazio in March 2002 - a Rome derby record.
