UEFA Champions League
2005-06 player's profile
Captain Barry Ferguson is a committed midfielder who has spent
much of his career at Rangers FC.
National team
A 20-year-old Ferguson made his senior debut for Scotland in
September 1998, and remained in the team as they missed out on
UEFA EURO 2000 after a play-off against England. Ferguson,
and Scotland, were to suffer a similar fate against the Netherlands
four years later, but he remains an automatic starter as captain.
Club
Glasgow-born Ferguson joined his boyhood club aged 13 and made
his first-team debut on 10 May 1997 at Heart of Midlothian FC,
as Rangers celebrated their record-equalling ninth consecutive
Scottish title. With Dick Advocaat's appointment as manager in
1998 Ferguson broke into the team, making his UEFA Cup debut
in a 5-3 win at Shelbourne FC and appearing 23 times in the league
as Rangers reclaimed the title. He was named Scottish player
of the year in 1999. In November 2000 he was made captain at
the age of 22, and lifted the 2002 Scottish Cup after scoring
in the final against Celtic FC. He subsequently inspired Rangers
to a domestic treble in 2002/03, scoring 16 league goals.
2003: Blackburn Rovers FC paid
10.8m to take Ferguson to the Premiership. However, a serious
knee injury at Newcastle United FC in December ended his season
early.
2004/05: Fully fit, he was
made Blackburn captain, but after manager Graeme Souness departed
for Newcastle, Ferguson decided to return to Rangers and did
so on deadline day for an initial 6.5m fee. He helped Rangers
to win their 51st league title and the League Cup, and in the
summer regained the captaincy.
Did you know?
While at Blackburn, Ferguson said: "I looked at the [Rangers]
website, I got the Rangers News delivered and I watched Rangers
TV."
