UEFA Champions League
2005-06 player's profile
One day there will be an AC Milan defence without the peerless
Paolo Maldini, but few can remember what one looks like.
National team
Maldini finally bowed out of the international game after an
Italian record 126 caps, stretching back to 1988 when he made
his debut in a 1-1 draw against Yugoslavia, after the FIFA World
Cup in Korea/Japan. The highlight of his Azzurri career came
when he played in the 1994 final - a stage he also reached at
UEFA EURO 2000, though both ended in defeat. Giovanni Trapattoni
then tried unsuccessfully to persuade Maldini out of retirement
to join the national squad for UEFA EURO 2004.
Club
Maldini made his Rossoneri debut against Udinese Calcio in January
1985, and more than 500 appearances later he has been crucial
to the most successful era in Milan's history. Maldini won his
first Serie A title in 1987/88, and was also part of the team
that dominated between 1991 and 1994. The latter season also
saw a Maldini-powered Milan take the UEFA Champions League title
after a sensational final performance against FC Barcelona, to
add to their European Champion Clubs' Cup wins of 1989 and 1990.
Further Italian titles followed in 1996 and 1998, and other honours
included three UEFA Super Cups and two European-South American
Cups.
2003: Criticised following
Italy's World Cup exit, Maldini responded in style as Milan won
the Coppa Italia and Champions League in 2003, a game in which
he was voted man of the match. He passed Gianni Rivera's record
of 501 appearances for Milan, and became the player with the
most appearances in European competition. The following season,
the elegant defender capped a club-record seventh championship
success by extending his contract at the San Siro to 2006.
2004/05: Twenty years after
his debut season, only goalkeeper Dida played more minutes than
the Milan captain in 2004/05. Maldini did not miss a game in
the UEFA Champions League as the club reached the final yet again
and scored the opener against Liverpool FC, but Milan lost on
penalties. He may have turned 37 in June but Maldini remains
a long way from retirement and renewed his contract until 2007.
Did you know?
Paolo's father, Cesare, also lifted the European Cup in England,
when Milan defeated SL Benfica 2-1 in the 1962/63 final at Wembley.
