FIFA World Cup™ Germany 2006 player's profile

One of the guiding lights of star-studded Chelsea, Gallas spent his first few years with smaller clubs before joining Olympique Marseille in 1997 and then Chelsea in 2001.
As a right-sided defender-cum-midfielder, he is one of the instigators of the attacks and a solid tackler.

Played three matches at the 1997 FIFA World Youth Championship, as well as appearing in the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup and UEFA Euro 2004. Was a permanent fixture in qualification for the 2006 FIFA World Cup™, playing in all ten of France's matches.

In 2004/05 he played in 26 games for Chelsea without once being substituted, despite the competition for places at Stamford Bridge.

UEFA Champions League 2005-06 player's profile

Not the most imposing of central defenders, William Gallas's frame masks a player of immense speed and strength who can also operate in either full-back berth.

Club
Born in Asnières in 1977, Gallas emerged as a teenager with SM Caen in 1995/96. More fine showings the following term took him to Olympique de Marseille. His development at the Stade Vélodrome was helped by Marseille's European campaigns with Gallas making seven UEFA Champions League outings in 1999/00. Claudio Ranieri duly brought him to Chelsea FC for €12.8m in May 2001 and he settled well into Premiership and London life. Gallas was one of Chelsea's best performers as they finished second in the Premiership and reached the last four of the UEFA Champions League in 2003/04. José Mourinho's appointment brought more competition for a first-team place but Gallas nonetheless played a massive part in Chelsea's back-to-back Premiership triumphs in 2004/05 and 2005/06, usually being deployed as a full-back.

National team
A former youth and Under-21 international, Gallas played his first game for France in his country's opening match on the road to UEFA EURO 2004™, a 5-0 victory against Slovenia. He went on to feature in all four of their matches in Portugal as they reached the quarter-finals and was also first-choice in France's 2006 FIFA World Cup campaign, helping Raymond Domenech's side go all the way to the final although he was unable to prevent them losing to Italy.

Did you know?
He scored his first UEFA Champions League goal against Manchester United FC, a 1-0 win for Marseille in October 1999.

UEFA EURO 2004™ player's profile

William Gallas may not look the most imposing of central defenders, but his frame masks a player of immense speed and strength who has profited hugely from playing alongside Marcel Desailly.

National team
A former youth and Under-21 international, Gallas played his first game for France in his country's opening match on the road to Portugal, a 5-0 victory against Slovenia.

UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying
Gallas went on to feature in three more of France's eight qualifiers as they topped Group 1: the 6-0 and 4-0 defeats of Malta and a 2-1 triumph against Israel.

Club
Born in Asnières in 1977, Gallas emerged on to the French scene as a teenager with AS Cannes in the 1995/96 season, playing 16 games. More fine showings in 18 matches the following term alerted Olympique de Marseille, who signed the player.

1998: Gallas continued to mature at the Vélodrome, where he was a regular for three seasons. His development was helped by Marseille's European campaigns, Gallas making seven UEFA Champions League outings in 1999/00.

2001: A number of the continent's leading clubs were tracking the defender, but Chelsea FC's €12.8m was enough to seal Gallas's coveted signature. He settled well into Premiership and London life, clocking up 30 appearances in his debut season. Gallas was then ever-present, and one of Chelsea's best performers, as they finished fourth in the Premiership in 2003 to reach the Champions League. In July he signed a one-year extension to his contract, keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2007.

2003/04: Gallas remained an integral member of the Chelsea side despite the arrival of several expensive signings, often filling well at right-back. He helped the Blues finish runners-up in the Premiership and reach the last four of the Champions League.

Did you know?
He scored his first Champions League goal against Manchester United FC, a 1-0 win for Marseille in October 1999.
