UEFA Champions League 2004-05 player's profile

A left-sided player who can also operate as a sweeper or midfielder, Romanian Cristian Chivu is one of Europe's premier defenders and a huge asset for club and country.

National team
A former Under-20 international, he took his senior bow against Cyprus in 1999. It was at UEFA EURO 2000™, though, that he caught the eye, scoring against England as Romania reached the last eight. Chivu was denied a place at the 2002 FIFA World Cup as Romania lost a play-off to Slovenia, but returned for the EURO 2004™ qualifiers, taking his caps total to more than 30.

Club
Born in Resita in 1980, Chivu's road to stardom started at CSM Resita, for whom he played 23 times in the 1997/98 season before joining FC Universitatea Craiova.

1999: After one full term at the Ion Oblemenco stadium, Chivu signed for AFC Ajax as a relative unknown in a €4.7m deal. He made 23 league appearances in his first season, was exceptional in 2000/01, and the following campaign was named Footballer of the Year after leading Ajax to league and cup success, having been handed the captaincy by coach Ronald Koeman in December 2001. His impressive displays and undoubted promise led to him being voted into the uefa.com users' Team of 2002, while he was also nominated as Romania's finest in a poll in his homeland. On the pitch, he continued to contribute as Ajax finished second in the Eredivisie and reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. In July he left Amsterdam for AS Roma, agreeing a five-year contract for a fee of €18m.

2003/04: Chivu was a regular in the Roma side that took second place in Serie A behind AC Milan, and in the summer new coach Cesare Prandelli ensured the Romanian would not be prised away from the Stadio Olimpico, although a foot operation was to keep him out of the start of the 2004/05 campaign.
