UEFA Champions League
2005-06 player's profile
Regarded as one of the most promising young strikers in Europe,
Djibril Cissé allies skill to speed with potent effect
and has a prolific scoring record.
National side
Part of the French team that won the 2000 UEFA European Under-18
Championship, Cissé scored six times at the 2001 FIFA
World Youth Championship as France reached the quarter-finals.
He then helped his country qualify unbeaten for the UEFA European
Under-21 Championship finals in 2002, but was himself bound for
the FIFA World Cup finals, where he played in all three Group
A matches having made his debut only 13 days before. He missed
out on UEFA EURO 2004 through suspension having been sent
off in an U21 international against Portugal. Returned to the
senior side for 2006 World Cup qualifying.
Club
The Arles-born striker joined AJ Auxerre's youth scheme from
local club Nîmes Olympique SC and made his senior debut,
aged 17, against Paris Saint-Germain FC in March 1999.
2001: He became a regular face
in the Auxerre first team in 2000/01, scoring eight times in
14 Ligue 1 starts. He really made his mark the following year,
ending up as the first division's joint top scorer with 22 goals.
He scored 14 more the next year, helping Auxerre to win the French
Cup. In 2003/04, Cissé was back to his very best, scoring
26 league goals and helping Auxerre to fourth position and a
UEFA Cup place. He completed a long-awaited move to Liverpool
FC in July 2004, moving for a club record 21m.
2004/05: Scored on his Premiership
debut against Tottenham Hotspur FC and also on his UEFA Champions
League bow against AS Monaco FC. However, in late October he
suffered a double leg fracture against Blackburn Rovers FC and
seemed to be out for the season, only to return as a substitute
in April for the closing minutes of the Champions League quarter-final
victory against Juventus FC. He appeared regularly from the bench
for the rest of the season, including in Istanbul against AC
Milan, where he scored in the penalty shoot-out that gave Liverpool
the European Champion Clubs' Cup.
Did you know?
Lillian Littler, the grandmother of Cissé's wife Jude
who he married in June 2005 in Wales, said: "He is a perfect
gentleman. I imagine she fell for his charm."
