Andy van der Meijde · Netherlands
|
UEFA Champions League
2004-05 player's profile
The latest in a long line of talented Dutch wingers, Andy van
der Meyde possesses all the attributes required to become a genuine
force in European football.
National team
Van der Meyde was first selected for the Netherlands for a friendly
against the United States in May 2002 and marked his debut with
a goal in a 2-0 win. "A great prospect for the future,"
said coach Dick Advocaat afterwards. The winger played in both
legs of the UEFA EURO 2004 qualifying victory against Scotland
and started the finals in Portugal as a first-choice. Poor form
cost him his place, however, and Marc Overmars started the semi-final
loss to the hosts.
Club
A graduate of the esteemed AFC Ajax academy, Van der Meyde made
his debut for the club in 1997, but after just five appearances
in two seasons between 1997 and 1999, he was loaned out to FC
Twente for the 1999/00 campaign where he played 32 games and
scored twice. Van der Meyde returned to Ajax with his confidence
restored and was rewarded with a chance to impress. The next
year, 2001/02, was even better as Van der Meyde chipped in with
five goals - including the third in the 3-0 Dutch Cup semi-final
success against PSV Eindhoven, and the second in the 2-0 defeat
of NEC Nijmegen which secured Ajax's 28th league title.
2003/04: Joined FC Internazionale
for an undisclosed, yet significant, fee and made a great start
with a goal in the 3-0 Champions League victory at Arsenal FC
in September. However, goals and games dried up and in 14 Serie
A appearances he played just one full game.
Did you know?
Van der Meyde said his loan spell at Twente helped him to become
"a more complete player".

UEFA EURO 2004 qualifying
Van der Meyde had to wait until the sixth qualifier for his first
appearance, playing 71 minutes of the 3-1 victory against Austria.
After missing the loss to the Czech Republic, the winger played
a full game against Moldova and both legs of the play-off triumph
against Scotland.
