UEFA Champions League 2005-06 player's profile

Having been signed as a centre-forward by Manchester United FC, Alan Smith was turned into a tough-tackling midfielder by Sir Alex Ferguson who saw some of Roy Keane in the Englishman's aggression and desire.

Club
Smith joined Leeds United AFC at the age of ten, signed his first professional contract with the club in October 1997 and announced his arrival as a striker by scoring with practically his first touch in Premiership football in a 3-1 win at Liverpool FC in November 1998. In 2000/01 he shone in the Leeds side that reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. However, three seasons later cash-strapped Leeds were relegated despite Smith's efforts and he joined arch-rivals United for €10.5m in the summer. Started brilliantly by scoring on his home Premiership debut but Wayne Rooney's subsequent arrival meant greater competition for places before a horrific injury at Liverpool FC in February 2006 left him sidelined for months.

National team
Despite having made his international debut for England in a 4-0 win against Mexico back in May 2001 and scoring the following year against Portugal, Smith's international career failed to take off as he made only sporadic appearances. After missing out at UEFA EURO 2004™, Smith returned to the squad for 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying but injury ruled him out of the finals.

Smith was a schoolboy BMX bicycle racing champion.
