Gary Neville · England
|
FIFA World Cup
Germany 2006 player's profile
His country's number one right-back for more than a decade, Gary
Neville is the longest-serving member of the current England
squad.
He missed the 2002 FIFA World Cup because of injury but
played in three of Englands four matches at the 1998 finals
in France.
Set to go into the FIFA World
Cup as one of Englands ten most capped players, Neville
has won six league championships, three FA Cups and the UEFA
Champions League with his club Manchester United.
He and brother Phil are the
first siblings to play for England since Bobby and Jackie Charlton
in the 1960s.

UEFA EURO 2004 player's profile
A versatile defender who can operate at right-back or centre-half,
Gary Neville has performed at the very highest level throughout
a trophy-laden career.
National team
A regular starter at international level, he starred for England
at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and the 1996 and 2000 UEFA European
Championships. However, injury denied him the chance of going
to the 2002 World Cup finals in Korea/Japan. When he and brother
Philip represented their country in 1996, it was the first time
siblings had played together in the national team since Bobby
and Jack Charlton in the 1960s.
UEFA EURO 2004 qualifying
Neville was a consistent performer as England overcame the challenge
of Turkey to win qualification Group 7, adding another seven
caps to his international account and linking up well with captain
David Beckham down the right-hand side.
Club
Gary Neville was the first of Manchester United FC's 1992 FA
Youth Cup-winning team to break into the senior side, his debut
coming against FC Torpedo Moskva in the UEFA Cup the following
autumn. Since then, he has won six English titles, two FA Cups
and the UEFA Champions League with his boyhood club - including
a historic treble of all three trophies in 1999. That year he
played eleven games in Europe, one being the dramatic win over
FC Bayern München in the final.
2002/03: Injury restricted his league outings as United
wrested the championship from Arsenal FC, but he clocked up another
ten in the Champions League to end the season as the record-appearance
maker in that competition alongside Raúl González.
2003/04: Enjoyed another solid season at right-back despite
the departure of his friend and wing man David Beckham to Real
Madrid CF. Scored some important goals as Manchester United limped
to third in the Premiership and an FA Cup final victory.

BBC's UEFA EURO 2004 player's profile
With 61 caps to his name and a string of domestic medals,
Neville is one of England's most experienced and reliable players.
His defensive ability has proved crucial for club and country,
and his years of playing with David Beckham on the right for
Manchester United have benefited the national team.
Danny Mills has deputised well and the emergence of Chelsea youngster
Glen Johnson will put pressure on Neville - but the Manchester
United man remains first choice.
His massive experience in the Champions League and at major finals
is crucial in such a young squad and Sven-Goran Eriksson will
continue to rely heavily on him.
