UEFA Champions League 2005-06 player's profile

An attacking midfield player who prefers to operate on the right flank, Ludovic Giuly has explosive pace over short distances and offers a valuable creative outlet.

National team
Aged 23, he made an impressive debut for France in a 2-0 defeat of Scotland in March 2000. Unfortunate not to be named in the squad for UEFA EURO 2000™, he featured more regularly following the appointment of Jacques Santini as coach in 2002. Giuly's UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying campaign was brief, lasting for just five minutes, and injury prevented him from travelling to Portugal. However, he was back in the fold during 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying.

Club
Giuly played for amateur side Beaujolais-Mont d'Or before he was drafted into the youth set-up at Olympique Lyonnais. He thrived under the coaching of Jean Tigana, Guy Stephan and then Bernard Lacombe and was reunited with Tigana when he signed for AS Monaco FC in January 1998 for €6.4m.

1997: He settled quickly and was an integral member of the side which won the championship in 1999/00. In his first six seasons Giuly scored 37 league goals in 154 appearances, and, as captain in in 2002/03, added another eleven in 36 games as the southern side finished runners-up in the league and won the French League Cup.

2003: In 2003/04 Giuly enjoyed another wonderful campaign, scoring regularly in Ligue 1 and dazzling in a UEFA Champions League campaign which ended in misery as he was forced off with an abdominal injury as Monaco lost the final to FC Porto. That proved to be his final act as he joined FC Barcelona in June.

2004/05: Fulfilled his promise by striking eleven goals as Barcelona won the Spanish title despite being laid low by a niggling knee injury and a thigh muscle tear.

Did you know?
Giuly's favourite pastime is horse riding.
