1978
Born November 7 in Peckham, England.
2000
April: Ferdinand's first term in Yorkshire gave him a real taste of European football, as Leeds United FC reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League before exiting to the hands of Valencia CF. His development continued, and as Ferdinand gained in maturity and consistency, so he began to fulfill the rich expectations they had had of him at West Ham United.
2002
April 15: Named in the PFA Premiership team of the year.
July: Transferred to Manchester United after starring in the 2002 Japan/Korea World Cup, his performances there persuading Sir Alex Ferguson to pay Leeds United a British record £30m for their captain.
2003
May: He ended his first season at Old Trafford as a title-winner.
September: Suspended for eight months for his "failure or refusal" to take a random drugs test. The Football Association upheld the ban, sidelining the defender until September 2004.
2005
May: Was virtually ever-present once his suspension expired as United finished third in the Premiership, reached the Champions League last 16 and the FA Cup final - in which Ferdinand had a goal disallowed in the 0-0 draw that preceded penalty shoot-out defeat against Arsenal FC. His disappointment was fairly short-lived.
June: After lengthy negotiations, he penned a new contract in the summer, tying himself to Man Utd until 2009.
2007
April 22: Included in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.
May 6: Helped Manchester United won the Premier League for the first time in four years as 10-man Chelsea, needing victory to keep the title race alive, could only draw 1-1 at Arsenal.
May 19: Lost the FA Cup final with Man United to Chelsea following a 0-1 extra time defeat at the New Wembley.
August 5: Helped Manchester United capture the Community Shield with a 3-0 penalty shoot-out win over Chelsea at Wembley.
2008
April 27: Included in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.
May 11: Vital member in the Manchester United squad that retained their Premiership title on the final day of the season to edge Chelsea by two points.
May 15: Signed a new five-year contract at Manchester United FC, until the summer of 2013.
May 21: Won the Champions League with Manchester United 6-5 on penalties against Chelsea in the final at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium. Rio led United with the kind of mature display that showed why he is considered favourite to become England's long-term captain.
October 27: Included in the FIFPro World XI Team of the Year.
Rio Ferdinand · England

FIFA World Cup™ Germany 2006 player's profile

One of England’s impressive collection of top-class central defenders, the elegant Rio Ferdinand was selected in the England squad for the 1998 FIFA World Cup™ but did not play.
Four years later, he started all five of England’s matches at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, scoring his first goal for England in the match against Denmark.

Ferdinand’s eight-month suspension for his “failure or refusal” to take a random drugs test led to him missing UEFA EURO 2004 and he has battled with Sol Campbell and John Terry for one of the two places in England’s central defence ever since.

UEFA Champions League 2005-06 player's profile

One of the most cultured English centre-backs of all time, Manchester United FC were prepared to pay a world-record fee for a defender to tempt Rio Ferdinand to Old Trafford.

Club
Ferdinand's career began at West Ham United FC, where he made his league debut in 1996. He was loaned to AFC Bournemouth before returning to Upton Park to play regular Premiership football from January 1997. Alongside Frank Lampard, he was a UEFA Intertoto Cup winner in 1999 and in November 2000 agreed a €27m move to Leeds United AFC, who he helped to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. After the 2002 World Cup, Manchester United FC paid Leeds €46.9m for their captain. Ferdinand ended his first United season a title-winner, but was suspended for eight months in 2004 for his "failure or refusal" to take a random drugs test. A losing FA Cup finalist in 2005, the Londoner made amends in the League Cup final the following season.

National team
Made his England debut against Cameroon in November 1997 and was selected for the following year's FIFA World Cup squad without making it off the bench in France. Overlooked for UEFA EURO 2000™ and suspended four years later, he was first choice in Korea/Japan - where he scored his first international goal in the 3-0 second-round victory against Denmark - and the 2006 World Cup, on each occasion losing in the last eight.
