UEFA EURO
2004 player's profile
Kieron Dyer can wreak havoc going forward with his speed and
skill and keep an opposing winger quiet at the same time, although
his progress has been stifled by a series of injuries.
National team
A star with the England Under-21 side, he made his senior debut
in September 1999 against Luxembourg but missed out on the following
year's UEFA European Championship. A lightning-quick recovery
from the player famed for his natural fitness allowed him to
appear as a substitute in the 2002 FIFA World Cup games against
Sweden, Denmark and Brazil.
UEFA EURO 2004 qualifying
Came off the bench in England's opening victory in Slovakia and
made three more appearances, one for 90 minutes, as Sven-Göran
Eriksson's side outstripped Turkey to win Group 7.
Club
Ipswich Town FC fans knew a star was born when Dyer broke into
the first team during the 1996/97 season. Ipswich finished fourth
in the first division that term but lost in the play-off semi-finals
- setting a trend which would see them miss out on the Premiership
in similar fashion three years running.
1999: Dyer wanted top-flight football to push his burgeoning
international claims, and that was delivered when he left Portman
Road for Newcastle United FC in a 9.5m transfer. His second
season at St James' Park was blighted by a shin injury which
required surgery, while the following term, 2001/02, he suffered
foot and knee injuries. In between, however, he helped Sir Bobby
Robson's side to qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
Agreed a new four-year contract in May 2002.
2003/04: Missed both legs of the UEFA Cup semi-final loss
to Olympique de Marseille but played 25 Premiership matches,
scoring once.
Did you know?
Dyer is a great believer in the value of sleep, and has a two-and-a-half
hour nap after training.

BBC's UEFA EURO 2004 player's profile
Has been considered one for the future by England for some
time, and will now be hoping to fulfil his potential and establish
himself in the team.
Filled the problem left-sided role for the first game against
Liechtenstein but was relegated to substitute as England beat
Turkey with Steven Gerrard on the left side of a diamond formation.
Dyer's vast reserves of energy and his eye for a goal have marked
him out as a player who could potentially make a massive impact
at the Euro 2004 finals.
