UEFA Champions League
2005-06 player's profile
Rivaldo Vitor Borba Ferreira has won, and starred in, most of
world football's premier tournaments. In summer 2004 he accepted
a new challenge, signing for Olympiacos CFP.
National team
Rivaldo made his Brazil debut in December 1993 and scored at
a rate of a goal every two games for his country - helping the
Seleção to the 1996 Olympic Games semi-finals,
the 1998 FIFA World Cup final, the 1999 Copa América title,
and victory in the 2002 World Cup. Hit five goals in Korea/Japan,
but dropped out of the squad in early 2004.
Club
Signed professional terms with FC Santa Cruz in 1991 before a
short spell with Mogi-Mirim EC. However, it was with SC Corinthians
Paulista that he made his name, scoring 17 goals in 41 appearances.
Moved on to SE Palmeiras and won the Brazilian title in 1994.
After the Atlanta Olympics in 1996, he was brought to Spain by
RC Deportivo La Coruña.
1996: In his only season at
the Riazor, Rivaldo scored 21 times as Deportivo finished third
in the Spanish league.
1997: Rivaldo was transferred
to FC Barcelona for 27m. He registered 43 goals over the
next two seasons, helping Barça win the Spanish double
in 1997/98. The next term he scored 24 times as Barcelona defended
the title, and in 1999/00, ten UEFA Champions League goals. Though
2001/02 was an injury-hit season, it ended with a World Cup winner's
medal and a 4.8m-a-year contract at AC Milan.
2002: After a promising start
in Italy, tactical changes cost Rivaldo a regular place in the
Milan lineup, and although they won the Champions League, he
watched the final from the bench. He then cancelled his contract
in November 2003, deciding to return to Brazil with Cruzeiro
EC before becoming a free agent. In July 2004, he ended five
months of uncertainty by signing for Olympiacos.
2004/05: An influential figure
in the domestic double, playing 23 league matches and top-scoring
with 12 goals - including the winner in the final game against
Iraklis FC which secured the league trophy. Also featured prominently
in the Champions League and UEFA Cup, and quickly became a firm
favourite with Olympiacos fans.

Rivaldo's performances in 1999 earned him the FIFA World Player
of the Year award.
