UEFA Champions League 2005-06 player's profile

A regular in the Liverpool FC back line for many seasons, local hero Jamie Carragher is a superb man-marker and tackler who has also worked on developing the attacking side of his game.

National team
Made his England debut against Hungary on 28 April 1999 but was not called on again until after UEFA EURO 2000™. Played in qualifying for the 2002 FIFA World Cup only for knee surgery to put paid to his hopes of being selected for Sven-Göran Eriksson's squad. Injuries and suspensions saw him selected for UEFA EURO 2004™ despite no appearances in qualifying, although he did not play in Portugal. Remains a squad regular.

Club
A graduate of the club's esteemed youth academy and a member of the FA Youth Cup-winning team in 1996, Carragher made his Premiership debut against Aston Villa FC the following season, marking it with a goal in front of the Kop. His development into a first-team regular has represented something of a boon to Liverpool - the Liverpudlian played an instrumental role as the side won the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and English League Cup in 2000/01. Carragher's versatility initially worked against him at Anfield as he failed to establish himself in a given position, but he took slotted in successfully at right-back during 2001/02. Carragher played in all 14 of Liverpool's UEFA Champions League matches in their first season back among Europe's élite and he ended the 2002/03 season with another winner's medal in the League Cup. Broke his leg in September 2003, ruling him out for four months, but still played 22 Premiership games and excelled in the club's late charge for the Champions League.

2004/05: In that competition Carragher wrote his name into Liverpool folklore with a string of stellar defensive performances as the club became European champions for the fifth time. Indeed, the defender did not miss one match of that or their Premiership campaign.

UEFA EURO 2004™ player's profile

A regular in the Liverpool FC back line for the past seven seasons, Jamie Carragher is a superb man-marker and tackler who has also worked on developing the attacking side of his game.

His development into a first-team regular has represented something of a boon to Liverpool - the Liverpudlian played an instrumental role as his boyhood club won the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and English League Cup in 2000/01. Carragher's versatility initially worked against him at Anfield as he failed to establish himself in a given position, but he took advantage of Markus Babbel's unfortunate viral problem to slot in successfully at right-back during 2001/02. Carragher played in all 14 of Liverpool's UEFA Champions League matches in their first season back among Europe's elite and he ended the 2002/03 season with another winner's medal in the League Cup.

BBC's UEFA EURO 2004 player's profile

Carragher's versatility has made him a useful player for Sven-Goran Eriksson to have at his disposal.

But his adaptability threatens to see him regarded as a jack of all trades and master of none.

The Liverpool defender was a regular for the England Under-21s, but is yet to establish himself as a real contender for a starting spot.

Steve Finnan's summer arrival at Anfield will not have helped his cause but Carragher's continued determination after returning from a broken leg last year makes him a crucial member of Sven-Goran Eriksson's squad.
