FIFA World Cup™ Germany 2006 player's profile

Emerson is a midfield all-rounder: playmaker, dribbler and ball winner.
He missed the 2002 FIFA World Cup™ after breaking his arm in a freak accident when he was keeping goal in training on the eve of the tournament. However, he had better luck in 2005 when he won the FIFA Confederations Cup.

Part of the Gremio team that won the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores in 1995, he was subsequently sold to Bayer Leverkusen in 1997. After moving to Italy, he won the Serie A title in 2001 with Roma and in 2005 with Juventus.

UEFA Champions League 2005-06 player's profile

Emerson is much admired throughout Europe and is seen as the complete midfield all-rounder: playmaker, dribbler and ball-winner.

National team
Unlucky to miss out on 2002 FIFA World Cup glory with Brazil after breaking his arm in a freak accident when he was keeping goal in training on the eve of the tournament. AS Roma team-mate Cafu took over the captaincy, and the stricken skipper could only watch as Brazil beat Germany to win the title for the fifth time. He has played over 50 times for his country, but did not feature at the 2004 Copa América, although he returned for the FIFA Confederations Cup the following year.

Club
Aside from a season at Botafogo FR, Emerson spent his entire career in Brazil in the colours of Grêmio FBPA before being lured to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 1997. He impressed enormously in Germany, scoring eleven goals in 82 games in the Bundesliga and making his presence felt in the UEFA Champions League.

2000: In July 2000, Emerson ended a long-running transfer sage by joining Roma from Leverkusen for a German record €19.3m fee. The Italian club had claimed that they had signed him on a five-year contract the previous January. Emerson won the Scudetto in his debut season in Serie A, 2000/01, despite making only 13 appearances due to a cruciate ligament injury, but had to settle for second place the following May. Roma also missed out on silverware in 2002/03, losing in the Coppa Italia final against AC Milan, and finished runners-up again the next season. On 31 July 2004, Juventus FC completed the signing of the Brazilian for €28m on a four-year contract.

2004/05: After following Fabio Capello from Rome to Turin, Emerson immediately became an intergral figure in his new team. Despite struggling with a leg injury in the final part of the season, Emerson played eleven games in the Champions League and 33 in Serie A, helping Juventus to win the Scudetto for the 28th time.

Did you know?
Emerson is nicknamed 'il puma' - the cougar - for his feline moves in midfield.
