Lucio · Brazil

FIFA World Cup™ Germany 2006 player's profile

Although he is one of the world's greatest stoppers of play, Lucio’s attacking skill adds an extra dimension to any team.
He played every minute of the 2002 FIFA World Cup™ finals and also played his part in Brazil's qualifying campaign for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Did not participate in the CONMEBOL Copa America in 2004 but featured in Brazil's 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup-winning team, having also appeared in the 2001 and 2003 editions of that tournament.

He scored for Bayer Leverkusen in the 2002 UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid before being sold to Bayern Munich in 2004.

UEFA Champions League 2005-06 player's profile

Widely regarded as one of the world's greatest stoppers, Lúcio is a FIFA World Cup winner who is at ease pushing forward as he in his customary role in the centre of defence.

After starting his career in 1997 at Planaltina EC, Brasilia-born Lúcio spent the next three seasons with SC Internacional before moving to German side Bayer 04 Leverkusen in December 2000 in an €8.9m deal that also included Diego Placente of Argentina. Coach Klaus Toppmöller made devastating use of Lúcio's attacking talents the following season, giving him a licence to drive forward at will and he headed the German side's goal in their 2-1 UEFA Champions League final defeat against Real Madrid CF in 2002.

A World Cup winner with Brazil the same year, Lúcio stayed at Leverkusen for two more seasons following Michael Ballack and Zé Roberto's departures for FC Bayern München, but was eventually reunited with his former team-mates when Bayern paid a €12m fee for him in the summer of 2004. The club have won domestic doubles in both of his seasons in Bavaria, although he has been asked to limit his forward excursions by coach Felix Magath and the 2005/06 campaign ended in the disappointment of elimination in the World Cup quarter-finals against France.
