1966 Born January 29 in Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. 2004 March: Named as one of the top 125 greatest living footballers as part of FIFA's 100th anniversary celebration. 2006 September 18: Romario's American adventure came to an end, when Vancouver Whitecaps knocked his club Miami FC out of the USL First Division playoff quarter final. Romario scored 19 goals during his spell in Florida and needs to net sixteen more strikes in order to realise a career one thousand goals. 2007 February 11: Romario came off the bench to score a 10-minute hat-trick as Vasco da Gama routed Volta Redonda 6-1 in the Carioca championship. He took his career total to 990 goals according to the tally he has kept himself but which includes goals scored at junior level and in friendly matches. May 20: Scored the 1,000th goal of his career, converting a 48th-minute penalty in Vasco da Gama's 3-1 victory over Sport of Recife in the second round of the Brazilian national championship. After the goal, the game was suspended -- with Vasco leading 3-0 -- as his mother, father wife, children and a horde of journalists rushed onto the field. Romario then ran around the pitch, waving to the cheering crowd. December 18: Suspended 120 days for failing a doping test in a Brazilian league match two months ago. Members of Brazil's top sports tribunal voted 3-2 to suspend Romario after he tested positive for the banned substance finasteride following Vasco's 2-2 draw against Palmeiras on Oct. 28. 2008 March 28: Announced his retirement, ending two decades at the pinnacle of Brazil's national sport. The 42-year-old striker told Rio's O Dia newspaper that he was out of shape and physically unable to return after months of inactivity. "I've stopped playing. I can't do it any more. I haven't played since November,' Romario said in an exclusive interview with the daily. "I always wanted to end the way I began -- without anyone noticing,' he added.
