Juninho Pernambucano · Brazil

FIFA World Cup™ Germany 2006 player's profile

An elegant right-sided midfield player with unerringly accurate dead-ball and passing skills, Juninho’s link-up play with his forwards provides a constant threat to defences.
A key figure in Lyon's capture of five successive Ligue 1 titles between 2001 and 2006, his passing and shooting have been a prominent feature of his French club's success.

He appeared in Brazil’s 2006 FIFA World Cup™ qualifying campaign as well as their 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup triumph, although he missed out on the CONMEBOL Copa America win in 2004.

UEFA Champions League 2005-06 player's profile

An elegant right-sided midfielder, Juninho Pernambucano's extensive passing range and deadly free-kicks have been crucial to Olympique Lyonnais' recent success.

Club
The free-scoring Juninho is part of a select group to have played a part in all five of Lyon's title triumphs, and it is no coincidence that the most successful period in the club's history has coincided with the elegant playmaker's time at the Stade Gerland. His curling, dipping free-kicks are feared across Europe, and he is just as likely to prise open a defence with a perfectly weighted pass. The Brazilian international came through the youth ranks at his local club Sport Recife before moving to CR Vasco da Gama in 1995. He enjoyed a successful six-year spell at Vasco da Gama, helping the club win the Copa Libertadores in 1998, the Brazilian championship in 1997 and 2000, and the Copa Mercosur in 2000, catching the eye of then Lyon coach Bernard Lacombe in the process. Juninho signed for Lyon ahead of the 2001/02 season and, with three Brazilians already on the club's books, he settled in immediately, playing a key role in bringing the club its first French championship. Juninho has grown in stature ever since. He scored five league goals in that first season in France, a warning to opposition goalkeepers as he hit 45 more over the course of the next four title-winning campaigns, taking his tally to 50 in the league in the process. His longest goal from a free-kick was measured at 41 metres and came against AC Ajaccio during the 2005/06 season, at the end of which he was voted Player of the Year by his fellow professionals in France. He added another for Brazil against Japan in the FIFA World Cup that summer.

Did you know?
Juninho is one of four players to have been a part of all five of Lyon's title-winning sides. The others are Gregory Coupet, Sydney Govou and Claudio Caçapa.
